what if we had an option to change icons to overwatch heroes (queen = junker queen, knight = orisa (horse)) etc

Spiderman31807 creator about 2 months ago

i thought about that when making it but couldn't think of good heroes for pieces for both white & black and they need to be different from each other because you cant color hero icons.

In fact my original idea was to use heroes themselves as pieces but you just cant spawn enough dummy bots for that, however i will say i cant currently modify any of my creations because my girlfriend told me to uninstall the game for personal reasons and i would need her permission to reinstall it.

Google en passent

Spiderman31807 creator about 2 years ago

passant*

"In chess, en passant (French: [ɑ̃ pasɑ̃], lit. "in passing") describes the capture by a pawn of an enemy pawn on the same rank and an adjacent file that has just made an initial two-square advance.[2][3] The capturing pawn moves to the square that the enemy pawn passed over, as if the enemy pawn had advanced only one square. The rule ensures that a pawn cannot use its two-square move to safely skip past an enemy pawn.

Capturing en passant is permitted only on the turn immediately after the two-square advance; it cannot be done on a later turn.[4] The capturing move is sometimes notated by appending the abbreviation e.p."

why did you have me google this..?

After a bit of research, I think I now understand. This was not you “aggressively trying to say that the En Passant I coded was bugged/broken without telling me what was wrong with it,” this was you “memeing that I had an En Passant in the first place…?”, or least a meme in some way, At least that’s what I gathered from this.

I've never heard of r/anarchychess nor the memes before now. (I don't play/watch chess that much)

I found more help from enteral wiki's than r/anarchychess when it came to understanding it better however.

EN PASSANT SUPPORTED ‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼

would be nice to have text below the icons so you don't forgor which is which

Spiderman31807 creator over 2 years ago *

I'm confused by what you mean? what is there to forget, is it just the fact that you cant see when an en passant is available.

Because the green move icon shows up if you select a pawn that could capture said en passant.

Also if it is that, since the en passant tile is in reality just an invisible piece valued at -1 with special properties. I could just render a small icon where they are in the tile while rendering every other piece, pawn, king of the hill tile and duck.

edit: Oh yeah in the current released version, duck and king of the hill isn't even supported yet. Progress update just need to finish setup chess and force captures during giveaway chess then its done.

i meant text below each piece/anywhere because none of the icons really remind you of what the piece is supposed to be

Spiderman31807 creator over 2 years ago *

ah ok.

see I'm a fast learner so even if i didn't build it I would still remember quite quickly off start locations alone, so I always think that others will too.

i wont add text beneath every piece as the screen will be cluttered too much, however i will add a button for during the game that lets you go to a reference page that shows each icon with its piece type under it (i'll even add the duck because why not)

Edit: reference page added (image of it on workshop.codes page, first image)
button to go onto page during game labelled "Piece Guide"

My Reasons behind each piece icon/what piece is what icon

Pawn (Arrow: Up): well it a pretty good icon choice for it maybe Arrow: Down would have been better but i went with Arrow: Up.

Rook (Moon): the moon icon is slim and tall like the rook.

Knight (Bolt): the bolt is a bolt of lightning, lightning is stereotyped as fast and so are horses which is what the Knight is normally shown as. (also has the up over shape, like a horse neck, or at least I thought that)

Bishop (Spade): a spade is a slim stem followed by a sharp point in the middle like the top of a Bishop kinda.

Queen (Club): a Queen is a basically just a bishop with few extra points and a club is basically just a spade with 2 extra points.

King (Diamond): had no good options so i just went with one that would be different enough from the rest so it could be remembered more easily.

Duck (Dizzy): (the dizzy icon is 3 stars with a small ring), like the king not really any good options and i went with something that would be easier to remember though on the board its also coloured yellow so thats not really an issue.
