[Draft] The predatory design of Overwatch's monetization and insentives Last updated June 27, 2026

It is no secret that Overwatch monetizes cosmetic content to a heavy degree. Over time this has ballooned to a level where not many similar games come close to the predatory and unethical nature of Overwatch. In writing this article I want to go over why this is unacceptable, how you are being exploited, what kind of effect it may have on the industry, and why free-to-play is not a good enough excuse.

Before we get into the whys. lets start with laying out some of the facts. This article is written with the expectation of you being an Overwatch player. As such none of this will be news, but it is important to know what we are talking about. I will try to keep this short and to the point:

  • Overwatch offers cosmetic content through various means, this content does not affect gameplay and offers no advantages to the player or their team. Previously Overwatch offered playable heroes through premium fast tracks, this is no longer the case.
  • Premium cosmetic content is bought through various means, each requiring their own form of currency:
    • An in-game limited-time store offering a small amount of cosmetics on a weekly and/or event based rotation.
    • An in-game store offering cosmetic content related the the eSports scene. Most content in this store is available at all times, but the more premium content is only available during limited windows.
    • An in-game store offering cosmetic content of the highest level, with multiple upgrade levels for each cosmetic.
    • A both in-game and out-of-game shop offering limited-time bundles of varying types, with each bundle often being tied to the current season.
  • Overwatch offers a reward track in the form of a Battle Pass.
    • A new Battle Pass is available each season, each season lasts roughly 2 and a half months.
    • The Battle Pass offers a free track which rewards some cosmetic content as well as some premium currency.
    • The Premium variant of the Battle Pass is available in various different types.
    • Completing the Premium Battle Pass will grant enough currency the purchase the Battle Pass for the following season, given you do not spend any of it.
    • Not completing the Battle Pass, Premium or otherwise, during the current season will lock you out of earning any of the remaining content, with no option to continue at a later date.
  • Overwatch sells playable content in the form of PvE story-driven missions that requires other players to play with.
